We are currently looking for a Quarry / Asphalt Technician to join our friendly team based at Tarmac Thrislington Quarry in West Cornforth, Ferryhill, County Durham. The role of Quarry / Asphalt Technician is working as part of a team that supports operations at Thrislington as well as other Tarmac sites in Quarrington Hill, Coxhoe, Cochranes Wharf, Killerby, Masham, Nosterfield, Bedale and Wensley (near Leyburn). This role is easily accessible if you live in Ferryhill, Spennymoor, Newton Aycliffe, Peterlee, Sedgefield, Darlington, Bishop Auckland, Durham, Consett, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and the surrounding areas.

Main Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Senior Technician, the role of Quarry / Asphalt Technician will be responsible for: 

• The sampling and testing of various construction materials (aggregates and asphalt) on a daily basis where accuracy will be paramount.
• Testing will be carried out to the highest safety standards and within your manual handling capabilities 
• At times, visit other Tarmac sites to carry out various sampling and testing duties 
• The majority of material testing carried out within the laboratory, which will include ovens, furnaces, sieves (with a mechanical shaker), weighing apparatus, chemicals and other scientific based equipment 
• Ensuring the quality of the materials is monitored at all times for both internal and external customers
• Adhering to company Health and Safety procedures at all times

The Ideal Candidate

To be successful in the role of Quarry / Asphalt Technician we are ideally looking for a candidate with laboratory experience gained within the construction sector, who possesses knowledge of aggregate and asphalt testing and production However we welcome applications from candidates without experience as full training will be provided.

The role of Quarry / Asphalt Technician is not a typical ‘lab coat’ laboratory type of role – it is a vital hands-on site based role, working in a small team closely supporting our quarries and other operational sites.

Suitable candidates for this role will: 

• Be hard working and self-motivated 
• Have excellent communication skills and be able to liaise with stakeholders of varying seniority levels
• Be accurate in their work and with strong attention to detail/able to identify potential risks/issues (training will be provided)

• Be able to work independently and to collaborate as part of a wider team 
• Be IT literate
• Possess a good numerical aptitude (handling calculations/interpreting results)
• Be flexible in their working approach (some sites are 24/7 operations so there will be paid overtime - weekend working and occasional night shifts) 
• Be Health and Safety conscious
• Hold a full UK driving licence (use of company vehicle)
